Nigeria’s food security is a pressing concern, with the country facing significant challenges in ensuring the availability, affordability, and accessibility of food for its citizens.

To address the situation, The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has issued a policy brief outlining the status of food security in Nigeria, highlighting the need for urgent measures to address the current food crisis.

The brief notes that Nigeria’s food inflation surged to 35.41% in January 2024, with the number of food-insecure Nigerians increasing significantly to 100 million.

To address these challenges, the NESG recommends a comprehensive approach to food security, including:

Land Security: Ensuring access to arable land for farming and reducing insecurity-related challenges.

Soil Security: Improving soil fertility through increased fertilizer usage and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Seed Security: Enhancing access to high-yield seeds for farmers and promoting local seed production.

Water Security: Increasing irrigation capacity to support all-year-round farming.

Harvest Security: Reducing post-harvest losses through improved storage and logistics infrastructure.

Storage and Post-Harvest Logistics Security: Enhancing storage capacity and logistics infrastructure to reduce food losses.
