The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to establish ranches in seven states as part of the 2025 budget.

The states selected for this initiative include Lagos and Ogun in the South-West, Imo and Cross River in the South-East and South-South respectively, Adamawa and Taraba in the North-East, and Kebbi in the North-West.

The establishment of these ranches is anticipated to yield several benefits;

1. Reduction in Conflicts: By providing designated grazing areas, the initiative aims to decrease disputes over land between farmers and herders, which have led to significant loss of life and property.

2. Enhanced Livestock Productivity: Organized ranching is expected to improve the health and quality of livestock, leading to increased meat and dairy production.

3. Economic Growth: The development of ranches is projected to create employment opportunities and stimulate local economies in the respective states.

4. Food Security: With increased livestock production, the initiative is poised to contribute to national food security by ensuring a steady supply of animal-based food products.

The farmer-herder conflict has been a longstanding issue in Nigeria, resulting in thousands of deaths and displacements over the years.
