Bandit attack leaves six farmers dead in Niger community

At least six farmers have been killed following a late-night bandit attack on Unguwar Wawa community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The attack occurred at about 10 pm when suspected armed bandits stormed the community and opened fire on farmers working on their farmlands. Those killed have been identified as Bahbe Bokobe, Luku, a member of the local vigilante group, Bahgado Bohboh, Naziru Kidebe, Abdulrahman Kidebe, popularly known as Ogede, and Bashiru Dahtobeh.

The incident has further highlighted the worsening security situation in parts of Niger State, particularly in rural communities where farming remains the primary source of livelihood. Residents of the area have called for urgent intervention by security agencies to safeguard lives and property.

The attack has also raised concerns about food security and economic stability in the region, as persistent insecurity continues to disrupt farming activities and discourage agricultural production.

Stakeholders have linked the rising attacks to the activities of armed groups operating around the Kainji National Park, which spans a large area of Niger State and is believed to be used as a hideout by bandits and terrorists.

They are urging the government to take immediate and decisive action to tackle insecurity in the area, secure farming communities, and protect agricultural activities critical to food supply and livelihoods.
