Lagos rolls out relief package for Makoko residents displaced by safety measures

The Lagos State Government has begun a humanitarian relief programme for residents affected by recent safety enforcement actions in parts of Makoko.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the initiative is aimed at easing the hardship experienced by families impacted by the clearance of structures located in high-risk areas.

He explained that the state is providing palliatives, temporary relocation assistance and financial support, noting that enforcement of regulations can be carried out alongside compassion.

According to state officials, the intervention targets households situated near high-tension power lines and other critical infrastructure deemed unsafe for habitation. Many of the affected structures housed multiple occupants, including children and the elderly.

The relief package includes food supplies, temporary accommodation support and stipends, with distribution coordinated through local government councils and relevant ministries to ensure transparency and timely delivery.

Sanwo-Olu said engagements were held with community members before the enforcement exercise, stressing that the objective was to safeguard lives and infrastructure rather than displace entire communities.

He added that state ministries have been directed to properly document all relief efforts and maintain clear communication with residents, while the government remains open to addressing concerns and clarifying the scope of the exercise.

The governor said the Makoko intervention reflects the state’s broader approach of balancing public safety, urban development and social responsibility.
