Nigeria at risk of hunger disaster as 35 million face food crisis

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that Nigeria is facing a severe hunger crisis, with approximately 35 million people, including 3 million children, at risk of acute food insecurity in 2026.

The situation is particularly dire in the northeast, where ongoing conflict and insecurity have disrupted agricultural activities and food supply chains.

The crisis is driven by a combination of factors, including escalating violence, soaring food prices, and economic strain. The WFP estimates that 15,000 people in Borno State will face famine-like conditions, while 6 million people lack basic minimum food supplies in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. The situation is further exacerbated by climate shocks, displacement and policy-related disruptions.

The WFP has had to scale back its operations due to funding shortfalls, leaving millions without access to life-saving food and nutrition assistance.

The organisation is urgently appealing for $129 million to sustain its emergency operations in the northeast over the next six months.
