Nigeria Aims High with ₦160 Billion Wheat Production Target

Nigeria’s government is setting its sights on a significant boost in wheat production, targeting an impressive ₦160 billion output value for the 2025/2026 dry season. To achieve this ambitious goal, the country has earmarked 40,000 hectares of land for wheat cultivation, with 80,000 farmers registered to participate in the program

To ensure the success of this initiative, the government is working to reduce input costs, such as fertilizer and seeds, to support farmers. The National Agricultural Growth and Agro-Pocket Project (NAGS-AP) will deploy Agricultural Extension Agents to guide farmers on modern agronomic practices and provide continuous field-level advisory services. Additionally, Fertiliser and Seed Quality Control Officers will be mobilized to ensure that all inputs delivered to farmers meet the required standards

The wheat production program will cover 16 states, including Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Cross River, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara. Borno State, in particular, is expected to play a significant role, with 3,000 hectares allocated and 6,000 farmers registered.
