Ogun govt launches initiatives to enhance food production, support farmers

The Ogun State Government has launched a series of initiatives aimed at boosting food production and strengthening support for farmers as part of efforts to transform the state’s agricultural sector.

Central to the drive is the Multi-Stakeholder Agribusiness Forum (MAF) under the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme, which is designed to improve agricultural productivity, create jobs and reduce poverty.

To advance farm mechanisation, the state government has procured 40 tractors, 10 bulldozers and harvesters. Officials say the equipment will enhance efficiency on farms, enable the cultivation of larger hectares and improve crop yields, while also reducing the drudgery associated with traditional farming practices and making agriculture more attractive to young people.

The government is also promoting climate-smart agriculture and strengthening farmer support systems to help farmers adapt to climate change and improve resilience. In addition, the Ogun Youth Agricultural Programme is targeting 8,000 youths annually, offering training in greenhouse and hydroponics farming to equip them with skills for modern agricultural practices.

As part of efforts to improve access to information and resources, the state has introduced the Ogun State Farmer Information Management System (OGFIMS), a digital platform designed to provide farmers with timely information on weather patterns, markets and best agricultural practices.

The Ogun State Government is further exploring partnerships with international organisations to secure funding and technical expertise to support agricultural development.

Officials said the initiatives are expected to enhance food security, reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth in the state, while laying the foundation for a more sustainable and prosperous agricultural sector.
