Federal Government to Establish Mega Tractor Assembly Plant

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to establish a mega tractor assembly plant capable of producing 2,000-4,000 tractors annually. This initiative aims to reduce the country’s dependence on imported tractors and boost local technical capacity. The plant is part of the Renewed Hope National Agricultural Mechanisation Programme, which seeks to transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector and enhance food security

The programme involves deploying 2,000 tractors and over 9,000 precision implements nationwide, targeting over 1.2 million farmers and covering more than 1.5 million hectares annually. This is expected to significantly improve agricultural productivity, reduce reliance on manual labour, and strengthen national food security. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, emphasized that the programme is not just about equipment rollout but a National Agricultural Productivity Revolution, ending the era of low factor density in Nigeria
The programme is supported by a N50 billion agricultural finance facility backed by the World Bank, Heifer International, and other technical partners. The tractors will be allocated to certified mechanisation service providers, ensuring optimal usage and broad access. The government plans to establish seven mega mechanisation centres and deploy mobile maintenance workshops to guarantee maintenance and sustainability.
