Boosting Cassava Processing in Nigeria: A Recipe for Food Security and Economic Growth

Cassava processing centres in Nigeria are receiving a significant boost, with various initiatives aimed at enhancing food security and driving economic growth. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has commended the International Fund for Agricultural Development-Value Chain Development Programme (IFAD-VCDP) for establishing cassava processing centres in Enugu, which meet required standards. This recognition underscores the importance of cassava processing in Nigeria, the world’s largest cassava producer, with an annual output of over 60 million metric tons.

The Nigerian government is actively supporting cassava processing through initiatives like the National Cassava Investment Accelerator. This ambitious programme aims to transform cassava into a $6 billion industrial powerhouse, unlocking new opportunities for farmers, processors, and exporters.
Several projects are underway to enhance cassava processing in Nigeria. The Bago Cassava Processing Centre, commissioned in Niger State, promotes mechanized farming, youth empowerment, and food security. SHINE Bridge Global’s Cassava Processing Hub, launching in Ogun State, will produce value-added cassava products for domestic and export markets. Additionally, Alvan Blanch’s Cassava Processing Systems provide equipment for efficient cassava processing, including washing, peeling, grating, and drying.
