Oil Spill Devastates Abereke Fishing Community in Ondo State

An oil spill in Abereke community, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, is causing widespread destruction to the fishing industry, threatening the livelihoods of residents who rely heavily on fishing. The spill, which occurred in October 2025, has contaminated coastal waters, destroyed fishing equipment, and left many families struggling to survive

Residents are reeling from the impact, with fishing nets, boats, engines, houses, and animals destroyed, leaving them with little means of sustaining their families. Speaking to Agricnews Digest, “Our only means of livelihood is gone,” lamented Mr. Ogunbayo, a youth leader in the community. We were told that the community has written several letters to the Ondo State Ministry of Environment, but no meaningful action has been taken

The community is calling for urgent intervention from the government and oil companies involved, including Shell and Guaranty Petroleum Nigeria Limited. They are also seeking assistance to prevent further environmental damage and restore fishing activities. The Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Mr. Oripenaiye, has assured the community that their complaints will be forwarded to the government and relevant authorities
