Modernizing Nigeria’s Livestock Sector: A $72 Billion Vision

The Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has unveiled a bold plan to transform Nigeria’s livestock sector, aiming to increase its contribution to the GDP from $32 billion to $72 billion in 10 years. This ambitious initiative involves a significant shift from traditional open grazing to modern ranching, with a focus on improving genetics, providing quality fodder, and ensuring access to water for livestock.

The ministry’s plan includes rehabilitating 417 grazing reserves into model ranches, with a focus on providing fodder and water for livestock. This approach is expected to not only boost productivity but also reduce conflicts between farmers and herders. The government is also working to improve livestock genetics, with the goal of increasing milk production and meat yield. To support these efforts, the ministry is collaborating with international partners, including Heifer International, to access technical expertise and funding
